Healing Effects of Laughter

Posted Jun 04 2008 7:04pm 1 Comment

How many times a day do you laugh?

Do you know we laugh about 100 times more as a child?

Research has shown health benefits of laughter ranging from strengthening the immune system to reducing food cravings to increasing one's threshold for pain. There's even an emerging therapeutic field known as humor therapy to help people heal more quickly, among other things.

How Stuff Works has a great article on laughter, explaining why we laugh and how laughter effects the brain. Laughter is a great thing -- that's why we've all heard the saying, "Laughter is the best medicine." There is strong evidence that laughter can actually improve health and help fight disease.

Groups can get together to laugh to learn how to laugh and perhaps do an exercise when they laugh. The laughter leader actually teaches people physically how to laugh. Laughter is a powerful stress reliever and it is said two hours of laughing is equivalent to 8 hours of restful sleep.

People meet for laughter yoga. Yes, that is right, laughter yoga - a blend of yogic deep breathing, stretching and simulated laughter exercises. C'mon - get laughing!
