Book explains mom's plastic surgery to children

Posted by Kristen D.

here's a book due to be released on Mother's Day called "My Beautiful Mommy," created to help children understand their mother's plastic surgery.

Click on the link above to read the article. I'd love to know all of your thoughts on this.

Personally, I share fears with one source in the article who worries that this book-in which at one point the mother explains that her new nose will not just be different, but also"prettier"-may lead children to think that they're body parts need fixing too. The age group the book was written for, 4 to 7, I think are much too impressionable to be introduced to such a concept as plastic surgery. If it were my decision, I'd probably wait to do the surgery until I was older-although truthfully I never plan to have plastic surgery. (Although I guess I can understand how it might improve confidence and self-esteem for some.)

Sigh. I also second Candice's "ick." I find the title and illustration completely odious. It seems to be a way for women to justify their new appearances to their children without taking into account how the assertion that now they're more beautiful (and therefore, happier) will affect their children, particularly girls, in the long run. Why be disingenuous about it?

How do we then teach our daughters about self esteem and true self worth? "Cut it away and fill it with plastic" ?!

Sad.
