My babies are going back to school tomorrow. And this family is in for a WORLD of change.
Thursday was orientation for both of them. At the same time. 30 minutes driving distance away from each other. Funnnnnn.
JB elementary school is HUGE. I don't think my Middle School was this big! He was very quiet and visibly nervous. To go from a small private school--even one that goes through middle school--to a school with SIX 2nd grade classes. It's a bit of a shock.
Just getting to his class was a trip, and we assured him that he'd be walked to class until he was comfortable doing it himself. We met his teacher, informed her of his food allergies. He will be changing classes "just like a big kid!" so with the exception of PE, he will be carrying his own epipens from class to class. At PE he'll hand them over to the teacher. We'll be having a meeting with teachers, lunch staff and nurse to go over action plans for him.
Then we were off to HIGH SCHOOL. OMG. HUUUUUUUUUUUGE. JQ took one look at her schedule, another at the map of the campus and started tearing up. She's doing block schedules, a bit like college, with one day where she has all her classes--"hell day" she calls it.
But she's happy with her schedule, and she's definitely going to get her exercise every day. Pre-IB Spanish 2, Pre IB English, IB Art, Honors Geometry, Honors World Geography, Honors American Govt/Economics. She taught herself Spanish 1 over the summer, and took Geometry last year, but felt better about repeating it here instead of moving on to Algebra 2. She is SO excited about Art, it's a 4 yr program. That and the Culinary club LOL The girl loves to cook.
Next year she hopes to take Judo for an elective. Anything to reach her goal of the 2016 Olympics.
It was sweet, at one point, she was getting lost trying to find a class after trying out her locker, a boy ran up to her and hugged her. He was from judo, a 10th grader, with a friend. The friend teased her about being a freshman. JQ's friend turned and said "This girl could kick BOTH our butts!" and they all laughed. JQ relaxed immensely and blushed from the compliment.
Later, she mapped out her classes, routes, locker stops, etc. She's not thrilled she has to catch the bus at 6:05 a.m.
Today, JM took them supply shopping (he is MY HERO). JB was done, but JQ just got her supply lists--don't they know everything is GONE by now??? But they managed to find everything she needed after 3 stores.
We read the newsletter from her school. Things like PSAT testing, College night jumped out at me (they encourage both for 9th graders). She's on the fast track and combined with judo, it's going to be a VERY busy year.
I have a 2nd grader and a 9th grader. May God have mercy on us! ;)
