scalp/hair pain

Posted Aug 24 2008 8:22pm 10 Comments
I sometimes feel extra sensitive on my scalp when I'm having a Migraine; without a doubt, I am a girl who can't stand to have a regular ponytail in for more than a few minutes because of the aches that come as a result. During and right after a Migraine, I've been known to feel scalp pain.

But this is different. All day the crown of my head has ached as if I had a ponytail pulling on it--but I hadn't put my hair up at all when the pain started. The pain is all around the roots of my hair and is exacerbated by my pressing on my ultra-sensitive scalp. It's truly a strange sensation, especially since, as I've said, I didn't have a ponytail in, nor am I having a Migraine.

A cursory Google search gave me some leads when I looked up "scalp pain" and "hair pain," but I'm doubting I have the ailments (other than Migraine) mentioned as possible reasons for scalp pain.

This post is mainly for myself in the case this continues--it'd be nice to be able to tell my neurologist when it started and how it felt.

Does anyone here feel this same sensation sometimes?

I also have the same problem sometimes!  sore scalp, hurts to touch hair.  I also have migraines- but this symptom does not always come with a migraine or lead into a migraine.  I tend to believe that I get a sore scalp and hair if I clip my hair to the back of my head (no matter how loose the hair is, or position or how small and light the clip is).  I have not mentioned to my neurologist.
mphs, I've since learned that my formerly unexplained scalp pain is allodynia (painful response to non-painful stimuli, such as touching or brushing).  I'm not sure what can help it other than trying to stay in good shape and such!

hi ,

i have such pains too.. at thr roots of my hair and at several place around my head.. it keeps changing.. and the stranges part is i have none of the symptons mentioned on most of the websites... no migranes, i have never worn a ponytail.. no constant headaches.. just this wierd sensation at the roots of my hair.. does any one know of any kind of medication ? should i visit a doctor for this ? please help

I also have had this weird phenomenon for around 3 years.  It must be neurological - maybe to trauma, because I've had a fall and car accidents.  My neurologist is giving me Botox treatments in the scalp/temple area every 3 months.  This has helped some....then they put me on Lyrica.  I finally went off Lyrica after 2 1/2 yrs....I'd put on lots of weight and didn't like other side-effects.  Now the constant pain is back.  It is strange.  I haven't received a formal diagnosis - partly, I think because I also have Fibromyalgia and Drs. tend to just put all pains into that "folder".  I have degenerative cervical arthritis, also.  HELP, anyone!!!
You could still have allodynia, Shilpa.  Many doctors are unfamiliar with the vast variety of pain disorders, so finding a pain specialist in your area might be your best bet.  Hope you start feeling better soon!
Rykersnana, if your current doctor is not meeting your needs, I suggest that you get a second opinion somewhere else.  I'm not telling you to ditch your current doctor, just visit someone else (a pain specialist? another neurologist?) and see what she/he has to say.

after a continuous research n being a medical student i found out tht one possible cuz of the hair root pain cud b folliculitis as well..so if u have scalp pain...plz try n touch the areas which hurt n try searching for any possible bumps on ure head...n if u have folliculitis you neednt worry much..all u need to do is go to a dermatologist! n fix up the issue...try having food stuff cotaining zinc which helps in case of folliculitis...but please do refer to a dermatologist b4 taking any medications or even medicated shampoos! :)
