Meet our new family member!

Posted Dec 30 2011 7:04pm
Welcome to the Slayer Family, Ratatouille, aka Tooey!

She is a common rat, and we are fairly sure she is blind. She's 8 inches long, and so is her tail! We found her just walking around the house, like "Hi, hi there, how you doin?" and the 2nd night I caught her without a fuss.

She is as sweet as can be, very docile and gentle, lets me pet her (but hates it when I pick her up by her scruff).

At first hubby was like "Well, we shouldn't interfere with nature and just let her go."

My response: "What woman who is NOT your wife are you saying that to?" I always wanted to do wildlife rehabilitation but because of my chronics I can't do it on the large scale I wanted to.

I am in love with this furry gal. She is so cute, her little ears are like leaf buds just opening, tender and wrinkly. Her eyes look fine but we've seen enough of her behaviour to know that either she's blind or has worse vision than a rat normally would. Beautiful whiskers and WOW what a long tail!

The kids are absolutely fascinated and JudoQueen is over the moon to keep her in her room. She was all set in a lovely cage but even though the pet store guy assured Judoman it was a rat cage--she got out. She walked right to my voice (none too pleased with the scruff thing again) and is chilling out in her makeshift home until a newer, smaller bar cage can be found.

The kids stayed up late last night, delighted with watching her--drinking her water bottle, nibbling her corn, crawling on top of her box and snuggling with her blanket. She is pretty cool to watch and her fur is so, so soft.

Most people probably think I'm nuts but I think she came to me for a reason. I love most animals, great and small, and I believe a kindness done to a small creature in need does not go unnoticed.

I think it's a lovely, unexpected way to end a year and begin a new one--with kindness and a new critter.
