Visit to the Zoo - Exercise or Physical Activity

Posted May 31 2010 6:10pm

Over the years I have been to the Cincinnati Zoo many times.  I really enjoy the Cincinnati Zoo, especially the Festival of Lights.

More than once while walking around the Zoo, I would find myself thinking – this feels almost like a workout.  So, I thought I would put it to a test and see exactly how hard I worked physically during a trip to the zoo.

My intent was to visit the zoo in the same exact way as I always do.  To be sure that I did not try to walk to fast, to try to work harder than normal, I took along my camera.  I have posted some of the pictures I took on this post.

During my visit I:

  • Was there for 4 hours.

  • Watched 2 shows.

  • Stopped at almost every exhibit.

  • Took a couple of water breaks.

  •

Findings
I did not really work that hard.  I generally do not use “calories” as a definitive indicator of how hard worked, but for this experiment I thought it would be appropriate measurement.  I used my “Polar” Heart Reat Monitor to track my numbers

Total Calories Burned: 720
Average Heart Rate: 72
Highest Heart  Rate: 80

Conclusion:

I have to rate a trip to the Zoo as “Great Physical Activity”, but I cannot consider it exercise with the intent of “physical improvement”.   I do consider the trip to the Zoo as “Excellent” for mental wellness.  Watching the animals is very relaxing and centering.  I encourage eveyone to get out to the Zoo for some great physical activity, but you still have to get to the gym before or after your visit.

Remember - Get to the Gym!!!!!!!!!!
