Suicidal Ideation

Suicidal Ideation, what is it?

It is not uncommon. Many people who do not deal with a mental disorder deal with it too… The feeling that you just can take it any more, “I WISH I WAS DEAD”, but you don’t really mean it. Yet, for the mentally ill, sometimes it is a symptom that just won’t go away. The thoughts are not just wanting to die but sometimes visualizing it. Even still troubling is how do you help someone with these dark suicidal thoughts?

First, you need to recognize where the thoughts are coming from. Most Psycologists make the distinction by putting it into or dividing the thoughts into 2 categories:

1. Is the suicidal ideation active thought and desire to die where the person is looking for any way or means to do it… i.e. “is making a plan.”

2. Is this Suicidal ideation a passive non-aggressive desire to die without a plan to bring about one’s death.

Sounds simple right? Not at all, because nine times out of ten, the person dealing with the ideation/s of death will only tell you by leaving “hints.” Hints? Yes, it is not normal for a healthy mind to talk about suicide, some like me, like to glorify it. Saving some one but dieing in the process or just thinking about out right doing it. We may leave these hints with comments like, “you’ll be happy when I’m gone!” or “Life sucks so why bother.” Could you tell, was I kidding? How about today’s guest cartoon, Da’ Stew-Pid World, the only text was “the end is near.” I added the “suicidal ideation” under it. Why? Because that is really what I drew the cartoon about. Yet, to look at it, you would think, oh how cute. Why? Because that is what my wife and everyone else who has seen it felt. These hints: comments, writings or drawings, etc… Are they passive expressions? Something to just brush off as meaning nothing?

Let me say this first, I’m not a doctor so please take any information I offer as a suggestion and not a fact.

I feel I can answer this for you. Since I’ve been there and continue to fight the ideation’s. We who have been at the real point of “no return” can tell you, there is

I believe that there is NO SUCH THING AS A PASSIVE THOUGHT OF SUICIDE!

Suicidal ideation demands immediate evaluation! These thoughts can indicate serious illness or imbalance in medications.

My Three “IF’s”

If usually, you think about death, then that’s not normal!

If you or someone you know is considering suicide, call 1-800-SUICIDE.

If a person has an actual desire to die in either form of suicidal ideation (passive or aggressive), he or she must seek immediate medical attention.

** So, what do you think about it?
