St. John’s Wort No Better Than Placebo in Treatment of ADHD

Posted Oct 03 2008 12:51pm

According to research discussed in this article, St. John’s wort proved no more effective than a placebo in the treatment of ADHD. An eight week study compared two groups of children diagnosed with ADHD, and there were no significant differences between the groups following the trial (one group was prescribed St. John’s wort, the other a placebo).

Not sure about the logic of this study. I’ve heard of St. John’s wort being used as an alternative treatment for depression (though I am not familiar with the results of any research with respect to that), but I’d never heard of St. John’s wort associated with ADHD. Maybe I’m just in the dark about any claims related to this, but if not, I wonder what previous literature led the authors to pursue this...
