Social Phobia and Therapy

Posted Oct 03 2008 12:53pm

According to this article over at Psycentral, a new study shows that therapy is more effective than medication in the treatment of childhood social phobia.  As the article states, social phobia is not just shyness, but an intense anxiety brought about by the possible negative evaluation of others.  In kids, this disorder can have severe repercussions for any activity where a child has to "perform" in front of others - sports, the arts, working at the board, presentations, etc.  As I mentioned in this post, using therapy to tackle problems related to behavior, as opposed to just medicating them, can often have an equally strong, if not stronger, long-term impact.
