Mental Health Humor : 5 Question FRIDAYS: STRESS - Welcome to 5 Question Fridays. Our weekly post that gives us a chance to get to know our readers and tap into their knowledge and experience.

Mental Health humor lisa Today we will talk to Lisa Brookes Kift who is a Marriage and Family Therapist. She has written numerous articles, tips, and tools about mental health and relationship topics as seen on her website at www.lisakifttherapy.com

Chato:Stress what is it really and is stress dangerous?

Lisa: Stress is a combination of physiological and emotional reactions to external (or internal) demands. It can be helpful or not. An example of “helpful” stress is the “fight or flight” response one would experience if being mugged on the street. An example of unhelpful stress is the executive who is overwhelmed with his/her responsibilities yet refuses to delegate – then copes with alcohol.

Chato:What does Stress have to do with mental illness?

Lisa: Stress doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with mental illness – but it has the potential to. Highly stressed individuals can struggle with depression and anxiety in conjunction.

Chato:How can someone decrease the symptoms and manage stress?

Lisa: Learning tools to stay in the moment instead of worrying intensely about the future (breathing, mindful meditation), talking to someone about their stress, exercise programs, assessing one’s life balance and possibly restructuring priorities and journaling are all great ways to manage stress.

Chato:You knew I could not resist asking this, is humor and laughter good for stress?

Lisa: Absolutely. If stressed people find a way to reframe their stress into something humorous – all the better.

Chato:With your busy schedule taking care of your business, your website, and blog, how do you successfully manage your stress?

Lisa: What a perfect question to ask the likes of me. In addition to the above mentioned responsibilities, I have a toddler, husband and other writing projects - so to say that I’m “busy” is a bit of an understatement. Yet I create a lot of my own stress. Exercise is a huge part of my stress management. I also occasionally sit down and write down all of the things I would like to do and map them out on my planner, assigning certain amounts of time for each. Otherwise, I have the potential to be more “stressed” than I’m comfortable with. I’m “Type A” – what can I say? LOL.

Thank you very much Lisa! We look forward to putting you on the spot again in the future. If any of our readers would like to participate in our 5 Question Fridays, just let me know and we will pick your brain.
