Is it possible to commit a crime while in an extreme state of shock -- even if the person blacks out, per se?

Can someone who goes into an extreme state of shock understand the gravity of their actions? For example, is someone who "blacks out" from a state of shock capable of committing murder or aggravated assault?

Yes, these things occur. This is exactly why most states have insanity pleas.
