Great question!  In my experience this is NOT common but I think it's helpful. Whatever works, works1  I'm glad you wrote "with" at 12-step program, rather than "instead of" a program.  Yoga practice improves mindfulness, which is consisten with reducing the power of the ego and aiding in the task of of many of teh steps.  Check out The 12-Step Buddhist or many of the links to other Eastern-influenced books that you will find at that site.  May you experience good fortune in your recovery.
This is a question which I ponder frequently.  My Guidance is that our chakras are in a healing dance as we do the steps, whether we are conscious of them or not.  If one knows how to palpate the chakras one can find the issues and blocks that need to be addressed as we work the steps.  Even knowing the archetypal sacred contracts in the 8th chakra can help inform one's step work.  would love to discuss this in more detail with those interested.  Amelia Loomis, ACSW.
