Interesting Review of a Book

Posted Oct 03 2008 12:52pm

This NYT article reviews a book entitled The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases From a State Hospital Attic.  The premise sounds interesting, as the authors examine pictures and possessions left behind in the attic of Willard State Hospital, a psychiatric hospital that operated for decades before closing in 1995.  The reviewer is less enamored of the the writing than of the photographs, ans the stories behind them.  The review is worth a look if you are in interested in the history of mental health treatment, or have an interest in ephemera and photographs from a bygone era.
