October 13, 2010. 33 Chilean Miners were rescued after being trapped for 70 days underground. Ever since that day I have been anxiously awaiting any updates regarding these courageous and inspirational men... especially interviews - first hand accounts. Then on November 4, 2o1o Elvis fan, and soon-to-be New York City Marathon participant, Edison Pena appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman to offer his take on the emotional ordeal he went through. Pena is well-known as the miner who (although does not know English) knew (in English) the words to every Elvis Presley song. If you followed the story you knew that he was the one that led the other men in Elvis sing alongs to help keep their spirits up. Pena is also known as the miner who jogged underground in order to keep his sanity, and as as he put it, he "wanted God to see that I really wanted to live."
When news broke that these men were going to be rescued weeks before they were initially supposed to I was so happy for them and their loved ones. I spent two full days in front of the television watching as each and every man was brought up to safety. While watching it I also wrote a couple of posts about it (they are listed at the bottom of this post.) Watching Pena's interview made my day! I am so impressed with his attitude, his wonderful sense of humor (given what he's been through), his impressive knowledge of Elvis songs :), but most of all at how humble he is. Here's the video from that interview - I hope you enjoy it (and his Elvis impersonation) as much as I did!
