DVD Review - "Streets of Fire" (1984)

Posted Oct 03 2008 12:53pm

One of the first "stylized" movies that combined rock music, action, and a slick, comic book feel, Streets of Fire is a low budget precursor to later flicks such as Batman, Spiderman, X-Men, Sin City, and The Matrix.  Just watched it again for the first time in years, and found it entertaining in a campy, retro way.  What was surprising is the quality of the cast, which included Michael Paré, Diane Lane, Rick Moranis, Amy Madigan, Willem Dafoe, Bill Paxton, Ed Begley Jr, and Robert Townsend.  Of course, they are all extremely young in this film, and many hadn't developed their acting chops at this point.  The dialog is rife with cheesy one liners, and the quality of today's stylized movies makes Streets of Fire feel even cheaper by comparison.  There are some interesting shots, however, and any movie that ends with a one-on-one sledge-hammer-fight scene can't be all bad, right?
