Don't Read The Program Notes!

Posted Aug 16 2010 12:00am
Interesting little nugget in this month's APA Monitor.  In the "In Brief" section, they note the research findings of Elizabeth Margulis (Psychology of Music, in-press); she found that via survey that concert goers without formal music training tend to enjoy the music less (at least classical music) if they read either a structural description or a dramatic description first.  The author speculates that attempting to link the music with a linguistic conceptualization may interfere with the enjoyment of the music.
