Does shopping fill a hole in your life?

Posted Apr 23 2009 5:23pm
Dr. Deb (whose blog I frequently visit) was interviewed for the article " Becoming a Postpartum Shopaholic" By Janene Mascarella with Parenting Magazine and posted a link to it on her blog. Since I'm a mom, I clicked over and read it right away.

To be honest, I'm not a shopaholic. I never have been and probably never will be - I'm too frugal. But as I read the article, I noticed that I have something in common with the new mom shopaholics in the article, I often fill the emotional holes inside of me the wrong way. Although I don't turn to the mall to buy away my depression, I do turn to the fridge to eat it away.

When I'm feeling empty, bored, lonely, or even happy, I turn to food. If I can't get to the food I want, I think about it.

I found the article to be a great reminder that physical things can't fix my emotional issues. My depression can't be cured with a tall non-fat, sugar-free vanilla latte, nor can my emptiness be filled with a giant bag of m&ms.

So as I sit here polishing off a bottle of Coca Cola, I'm making a commitment to myself to be mindful of what I try to fill my holes with and to find a more suitable method than caffeine and chocolate.
