In April, 18 year old Disney star, DemiLovato, reveled that she is bipolar. I had recorded her 20/20 interview about her time in rehab, cutting, being bullied as a child and finally being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I just had a chance to watch it the other night and was proud of the young singer/actress for being honest about her mental illness.
She shared that she began dealing with depression when she was a child and began cutting herself when she was 11.
She told People magazine, "I never found out until I went into treatment that I was bipolar. Looking back it makes sense. There were times when I was so manic, I was writing seven songs in one night and I'd be up until 5:30 in the morning."
Thanks to treatment, she feels like she is finally in control, something she hasn't felt before.
DemiLovato pointed to a childhood history of being bullied that contributed to cutting and an eating disorder. After being frequently made fun of and told that she was fat as a kid, Demi developed anorexia and bulimia.
In fact, the bullying and verbal abuse from other middle school students was so bad that she chose to be home schooled.
Fortunately, earlier this year her management and family helped her realize she needed help for her mood swings, cutting and anorexia. She checked into Timberline Knolls, a residential treatment centre in Illinois for women battling addiction and eating disorders.
While at the clinic, she was inspired to get better by her 9 year old half sister Madison De La Garza, who plays Juanita Solis on Desperate Housewives.
DemiLovato is speaking up against bullying and eating disorders, while putting another face to bipolar disorder. After seeing her interview on 20/20, I believe she's someone that my little girls can look up to.
