SELF-ESTEEM

Are you kidding me? This big, sexy man would never have self-esteem issues. He is fun and a great guy. I can tell just by looking at his mug shot... Come on he is a Mental Health Advocate. He has to have it all together and be positive all the time…

Well, if that is what you’re thinking then all you need to to do is look at the site MySpace page... only 15 friends… No really, self-esteem, plays a big part in all our mental health: consumers, caregivers and professionals alike.

We all use it to sum up ourselves as a self-appraisal of our own worth. “You are who you think you are.” Some seem to have too much and others too low. Then there are those that have very little self-esteem but put on a show for everyone else to make them think they have a lot of it.

Yet, is having low self-esteem a bad thing? Well, according to Better Self Esteem there are some major consequences of low self-esteem.

Low self-esteem can have devastating consequences.

* It can create anxiety, stress, loneliness and increased likelihood for depression.
* It can cause problems with friendships and relationships.
* It can seriously impair academic and job performance.
* It can lead to under achievement and increased vulnerability to drug and alcohol abuse.

Worst of all, these negative consequences themselves reinforce the negative self-image and can take a person into a downward spiral of lower and lower self-esteem and increasingly non-productive or even actively self-destructive behavior.

What can you do to change this physiological state? Well, I say laugh! Then check out this site to see ways to have healthy self-esteem… Better Self Esteem

That’s where I’ll be after I enjoy today’s cartoon and leave a great comment about it to help my self-esteem.

** So, what do you think about it?
