Beware of Benzos!

Benzodiazepines, or "Benzos",  are essentially what all anti-anxiety meds are categorized under.  For example, the med I take for my anxiety and panic attacks is called Clonazepam.  I have been taking one form of Benzo or another for years now - on a daily basis... I was taking 4.5 mg/day and am currently down to 2 mg/day.  I had NO idea just how DANGEROUS these drugs were until I read about them in the book "Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America" by Robert Whitaker .  I've mentioned this book before and I will be mentioning it again and again. 

After reading about benzos in his book I started doing some of my own research and was appalled and scared to death by what I read.  First off, benzos are NOT meant to be taken long-term.  Why hasn't anyone told ME this?  Why have I been taking anti-anxiety meds for YEARS if they are only meant to be taken on a short-term basis?  Why did the doctor write the prescription and tell me it was okay to take?!
