Why have I been bleeding for two weeks?

Posted by HealthMS

I have been bleeding for the past two weeks. I am 45 years old and had a baby last year.   My bleeding started around my period time and it was spotting first then turn into light bleeding.  I have a doctor appointment for ultrasound and blood test by the end of this week.  My period has always been every 28 days for 5-7 days.  Has anyone experienced anything like this?  What could be the problem?

Early on during teenage years and later on while approaching menopause, your hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis can get thrown off cycle and lead to irregular and even prolonged menses.  Polyps & fibroids can also cause bleeding for 2 weeks.  Both a thickened & even a thin uterine lining can bleed or spot for a long time, the former sloughing off excess endometrial tissue while the latter bleeds from irritation of the raw lining.  Hopefully you've got your answer by now.  Good luck!
