Is my brownish dark bleeding due to menopause?

Posted by Liz

I'm 52,been having hot flashes and night sweats for quite a few years now. Two weeks ago i had severe sharp pains for 2-3 days on both ovaries. My period started a few days ago and the entire time it was dark brown almost black. Is this normal and part of menopause or something else.

Dear Liz,

It's unclear what the bleeding might be due to without more testing. Given the sharp pains in your ovaries coupled with your bleeding, it would be a good idea to see your gynecologist for hormonal testing, and perhaps s/he'll wish to check an ultrasound to rule out causes other than Menopause.

Good luck - Let us know what you find out!
