i'm 47 and my period stopped the dr. wants me to take provera to start it. why? dr. said I'm not in menopause

Dear Bonnie,

I'm not sure why your physician wants you to take Provera. Ask him or her. And get a second opinion. The only way to be sure you are not beginning perimenopause is to do hormone levels (and not just a one-time level, several thruout the day or over more than one day - there is saliva testing that can do that, although some MD's pooh-pooh it.)

You are certainly the right age to begin perimenopause and the Menopause transition. I'd definitely push for an answer to your why question. It's really important to be followed by a physician or healthcare professional; not led by them! Sounds like you are doing just that!  Keep us posted! Your experiences can help other women.
