FSH Levels Predict Bone Mineral Density Changes During Menopause

The initial circulating level of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and the longitudinal change in FSH are strong predictors of bone mineral density (BMD) changes during the menopausal transition, new research shows.

"To our knowledge, this is the first study to longitudinally characterize BMD loss at the spine and hip in women during the menopausal transition and relate that loss to levels of change in reproductive hormone concentration," lead author Dr. MaryFran R. Sowers, from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and colleagues note.
