Are you being “bugged” by your partner to be intimate but you just don’t feel like it? Is it because you discovered since entering , sex has become too painful?
Do you wish you felt like it, but it hurts too badly causing it to be a turn off? Are you afraid to tell your husband/partner – fearing he won’t understand? Which came first? The pain and lack of lubrication or the lack of desire?
From my experience, I think it all goes hand-in-hand. If you find it painful to have intimacy because of having a challenge with, then of course you are going to shy away from it or find an excuse of why you can’t participate.
Sexual arousal becomes more difficult because as the levels of estrogen decrease, you are producing less lubrication. The mucous membranes around the vagina are actually changing.
As the estrogen levels start to drop, the walls of the vagina become less elastic, drier and thinner. The blood supply is reduced because the estrogen is what increases the size and flexibility of the blood vessels, and now there is less.
As the cells in the vaginal walls get thinner and drier, they are more prone to itchiness and irritation. Some degeneration can take place.
Without using extra lubrication, you may find it is very painful, irritating or you may even bleed.
We know there are changes during menopause in regard to the vaginal walls and vulvar tissues.
What is the good news?
The good news is that studies have shown that the more sexual activity during this time, the more it helps to prevent degeneration even without any other treatment required.
The more you have sex, the more the tissues will respond to stimulation, taking away the pain and irritation. It will even help them become healthier!
Having sex one time a month is better than not having it at all, but three times a month, shows an even bigger difference - less degeneration.
