Irregular bleeding can be a symptom of perimenopause, and can also be symptomatic of other more serious conditions. The next step you are already taking with the ultrasound, which will help rule out more serious problems. You may also want to have hormone levels tested to see if you are indeed in perimenopause.
Given your age and recent history of irregularity,it is fairly likely that perimenopause might be the answer. So don't worry too much, but get the ultrasound and consult with your doctor to be sure.
Keep us posted.

I am 50 years old and have been regular with my cycle all my life. Two months ago I was a week late and then the next month I was two weeks late, I had an odd period for me, there was no beginning middle or end to it, it just commenced and abrubtly stopped. then a week later I began with this brown light bleeding and it has been two weeks now and still the same thing, it is not heavy, just always there when I wipe, it is accompanied with menstral type cramps at times. I am scheduled for a pelvic ultra sound in a few days, however, I am very worried, has anyone else experienced this? I would appreciate any feedback. Many thanks.
