Bioidentical Hormones

Article by T. Robb

Natural Bioidentical Hormone Supplementation

Bioidentical or used in natural hormone replacement therapy are biologically identical to what the human body makes. The molecular structure is identical to the molecular structure of hormones created in the body. Natural bioidentical hormones come from plant extracts such as soy and wild yam and are synthesized in the lab to replicate the hormones in the body.

Bioidentical hormones have been safely used in Europe for the treatment of menopause for over 50 years. They are not the synthetic drugs like Premarin which is made from pregnant mare’s urine and prescribed in a one dose fits all method. The use of Premarin produces side effects such as bloating, brittle bones, low libido and depression, not to mention the deadly consequences of heart attack, blood clots, stroke and breast cancer. Pharmaceutical companies are not interested in bioidentical hormone mixtures because they are not patentable. Synthetic hormone replacement therapy generated huge profits for the pharmaceutical companies prior to the release of a report known as the Women’s Health Initiative in 2002. This study revealed the dangerous side effects of traditional hormone replacement therapy and since that year, pharmaceutical companies have experienced a large loss in profit from the sale of synthetic hormones.

It can be difficult to find a doctor who is knowledgeable enough on menopause and hormones who can prescribe a bioidentical hormone regime. Doctors with this training will monitor your hormone levels and your progress and adjust the dose as necessary. If you are having difficulty locating a doctor with these skills, an excellent source for locating a doctor is a compounding pharmacy. Compounding pharmacies will make up your bioidentical hormone mixtures according to the prescription you are given.

A hormone panel will be done at your first visit to a doctor who works with , or they will prescribe an estrogen mixture such a tri-est or bi-est, and progesterone cream according to your symptoms and then see how your body adjusts in a couple of months. You should begin to experience an improvement of your symptoms in one to two weeks. These bioidentical creams are used cyclically to mimic the natural cycle of the rise and fall of hormones before the onset of menopause.
