why is skin on the edge of my big toe hard? (near the toe nail)

There is sore and slightly hard skin on the right side of the toenail on my Right foot's big toe and the same on the left (slightly less sore on the left side of the nail)

 What can i do to get rid of it, it used to be green till i cut it and cleaned it with baths daily... It is annoying and expensive if needing Chiropody etc.
