What would cause a painless bleed from the penis? Bleeding stopped in about 12 hours.

Husband woke up covered in blood from his penis, had no pain at all. Bleeding continued through out the day. The bleeding seemed to clot at times, but would start again after he urinated. Stopped completely later the same evening.
