What would cause a painful,hot and swollen back of the upper thigh muscle?

My boyfriend is in security and he must ride in a 3 wheel motorized bike however it is made for standing only. So he stands the whole time and rides it over speed bumps, etc. For the past 2 days he has come home with a painful back right upper thigh muscle. It also feels swollen and quite hot to me. Can you give us any idears on this???
