What does blood and blood clots in urine mean?

Posted by ej

I am a 51 year old man. Yesterday when I urinated it looked normal. The next time I urinated it was dark red or purple and I had no burning or pain. The next time I urinated it was dark red or purple and it had blood clots in it and it burned slightly in the middle of my penis? What could be the cause?

Your symptoms are of a Urinary tract infection (UTI).

Something is not right somewhere within the urogenital tract.  It could be something as simple as a low-grade infection. It might be a bladder disorder or kidney stone, bobbling around causing irritation and pain of the lining and therefore blood in the urine. Or it may be an early warning sign of a kidney cancer, ureteral cancer or even a bladder cancer.

Also, urine can be discolored by medications or foods.

Whatever the cause, blood in the urine is serious and is not normal at any time and must be examed, have lab testing and evaluated by a urologist.
