What can I do to slow prostate growth?

Posted by Dan

I am two weeks postop having a turp.  Are there any foods to eat or avoid, or supplements I can be taking to slow the growth of the prostate.

Nutrition:
    * Eat whole, fresh, unrefined, and unprocessed foods. Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, soy, beans, seeds, nuts, olive oil, and cold-water fish (salmon, tuna, sardines, halibut, and mackerel). Eating organic food helps reduce exposure to hormones, pesticides, and herbicides.
    * Avoid refined sugar and flour, dairy products, refined foods, fried foods, junk foods, hydrogenated oils, alcohol (particularly beer), and caffeine.
    * Drink 50% of your body weight in ounces of water daily (e.g., if you weigh 150 lbs, drink 75 oz of water daily).

Supplements and Herbal Medicine:
These are intended to provide nutritional support. Because a supplement or a recommended dose may not be appropriate for all persons, a physician (i.e., a licensed naturopathic physician or holistic MD or DO) should be consulted before using any product.

    * Vitamin E
    * Beta-sitosterol
    * Magnesium
    * Zinc picolinate
    * Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens)
    * Pygeum (Pygeum africanum)
    * Pumpkin Seed- (Cururbita Pepo)

Beta sitosterol, a phytsterol, found in plants has been well researched for prostate health. Other ingredients such as pumpkin seeds, saw palmetto, or pygeum have relatively mild efficacy compared to beta sitosterol. Beta sitosterol also shows a strong supportive role in maintaining healthy urine flow and functions. Prostate supplements should contain beta sitosterol and other vitamins and minerals that support prostate health such as zinc, selenium, molybdenum, and copper.  Look for prostate supplements that at least 600 mg of pure beta sitosterol, like Super Beta Prostate.
