Timing Affects Football Injury Severity

Posted Aug 13 2009 6:18pm

As the new school year is beginning, football season isn’t far behind. With football, football parents know that some injuries are bound to occur. But what they may not know is that during high school football games, “injuries sustained at the xchng_football_1 beginning or middle of a game are more severe compared to injuries sustained during the end or in overtime,” show results of a new study.

The study, published in the journal Research in Sports Medicine and conducted by researchers in the Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP) in The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, is the first of its kind, zeroing in on when injuries occur during a high school football game.

According to the study findings:

  • 16% of injuries occurred at the beginning of the game
  • 54% of injuries occurred in the middle of the game
  • 30% of injuries occurred at the end of the game or during overtime
  • 33% of injuries that occurred during the kickoff and punt were severe
  • 20% of injuries that occurred during kickoff and punt were concussions
  • 20% of all injuries were severe
  • 44% of severe injuries were broken bones

What does this all mean? The intensity of the game varies according to the game stage and this results in the differing injury rates and severity.
