The Pros and cons of chemical pesticides

Posted Oct 26 2010 5:04am

Introduction

Neighbors can be annoying especially when they have a tendency to interfere and gossip about your personal life while you prefer to keep to yourself and would like to tend to your daily business.

Perhaps, it takes a degree of control to know that there are something that you can and cannot control. But it is an annoyance that never wants to go away especially if you come across as a person who does things differently!

Farmers, of course, are pretty used to this in the form of insect and rodents acting as pests and that want to get a piece of their "hard work". And while these "pests" can put any farmer out of business if they are allowed to do their thing, there have been traditional solutions such as pesticides that might have worked in the past but upon recent discovery, have been known to cause more trouble than otherwise.

Farming and Traditional Pesticides

Since farming in today's world is anything but a charitable venture, productivity (in other words, crop yield) which in turn, gets converted into cash for farmers is something that farmers must have their eye on constantly as those crops take form from simple seeds into the produce that the masses will consume in the future.

But what does one do when pests (who would like a piece of the action for free) go through crops like a hot knife through butter?

The traditional solution for this has always been conventional agriculture pesticides that have are not necessarily "natural" but are actually manmade, and while they are effective in killing off "pests", in general… they tend to do much more than that.

Perhaps, they misunderstand humans to be "pests" in the process as well…

But whatever the case, there are both pros and cons to using manmade pesticides in the growth of agriculture, as scientists and researchers have found over the past decade, and instead are now, moving towards a more organic process of creating immunity for their crops.

Pros and Dangers of Man made (traditional) Pesticides

Since pesticides have come under the scrutiny of the public recently, the government has gotten ever stricter about the standards that are involved in approving a particular make of pesticides for use. And despite the fact that government agencies consider the approved ones to be 'safe', nothing can be further from the truth.

And if anything the only plus point in favor of artificial pesticides is that they do get the job done in killing "pests", the number of negatives are just bizarre, as it makes one wonder why it took people so long to figure that 10 out of the 12 most harmful chemicals are found in lethal doses in artificial pesticides.

In consuming produce that are riddled with heavy doses, there are slew of ways by which this can have harmful health effects on humans in the form of hormonal imbalances on both men and women, asthma (for farmers are exposed to them daily), neurological effects, birth defects and cancer.

Not only do they affect humans but they also have a negative effective on the environment as natural agents such as water, air and the targeted pests themselves tend to move them away from the intended destination, and causes water, soil and air pollution in the process apart from effecting every living creature that comes into contact with it… apart from just humans.

And while plants have for millions of years prepared their own pesticides, one wonders what have scientists been doing for so long. And if you want to know more about what plants to, this article on pesticides is an interesting read… so enjoy!

In Closing

And one wonders whether one can use these traditional pesticides on an annoying neighbor… err… pest or two!
