The Economy Is Causing Vasectomies!

Posted Apr 17 2009 11:39pm

Bare with the title. My dad had always been a big NRA guy and he’s got one of those bumper stickers that says guns cause violence like flys cause garbage, so the title is kind of a play with words…or is it? Perhaps in these hard times, people are actually acting in a more responsible manner. Having children isn’t cheap. Pregnancy and childbirth are very expensive and after that it’s just a long, drawn out bill. It’s a bill always worth paying when you love your children.

Most men don’t get a vasectomy just so they can screw around without wearing a condom. Any dude that does that deserves an STD he contracts. Sadly he’ll pass it on to every women he has sex with. Even though there is no solid evidence that says that the economy has spurred a rise in vasectomies, a study by the NY Times is saying that there seems to have been a sharp increase since the economic downturn.

The Times highlighted three clinics and physicians’ offices that have noticed a recent increase in vasectomies. At one Planned Parenthood affiliate serving California’s San Diego and Riverside Counties, requests for vasectomies increased by 30% to 64 procedures in the first three months of 2009. Spokesperson Vince Hall said, “The recession has created a new level of urgency among our clients,” adding, “We used to have a three- to six-week waiting period. Now men have to wait two-and-a-half months to get an appointment.” Hall added that a possible contributing factor to the increase is that unemployed men often qualify for no-cost vasectomies under California’s Family Planning, Access, Care and Treatment Program.

Crazy times we’re going through right now and if men are getting vasectomies because of them, I say good for them. The great thing about a vasectomy is that it’s fairly easily reversable, as you can kind of see from the image above. To read more about this study visit Medical News Today.
