Older men who want to improve their body composition and muscle performance may benefit from extra testosterone and growth hormone, say researchers.
Researchers in Los Angeles studied 122 men, aged from 66 to 75 years who had testosterone and growth hormone levels expected for their age group. They were then divided into groups and they received varying doses of growth hormones, or none at all.
At the end of the 16-week study, which was published in the June issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, the researchers found that the men gained an average of 2.2 to 6.6 pounds in lean body mass. The higher the testosterone dose and the higher the growth hormone, the higher the weight gain.
In addition, fat mass dropped. It decreased by between 0.9 to 5.1 pounds. Also improved was the men’s aerobic endurance and muscle strength.
The study is still preliminary and more work must be done to understand the effects of the testosterone and growth hormone.
