The New Year has started. Every time January arrives, many people make it their mission to try and get fit, especially after spending the past week of the previous year eating and drinking too much.

While some people think it’s enough to just exercise for the first few weeks, it’s important to stay in shape all year round.

It doesn’t take too much effort to start exercising, even if you’re a little older. Even the gentlest activities such as walking and cycling can help to keep the body working and see those excess pounds melt away. Staying healthy is about more than just exercise. Simple things like drinking enough water or brushing your teeth every day can help to keep disease at bay, which is vital at all times of the year. Recent stories about the state of the UK’s National Health Service make staying healthy more important than ever.

Recently, news that as many as one in every three patients have waited for more than four hours in Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments served as a reminder that, when injured or ill, getting treatment on the spot is tricky. The report, as featured on , revealed more harrowing stats about patients’ experiences.

The general theme of waiting longer than necessary to receive healthcare is something no-one will want to be put through. Waiting at least half an hour before seeing a doctor is something a third of patients who spoke to the Care Quality Commission complained about.

The longer someone goes without care, the harder it will be for doctors, nurses and surgeons to administer treatment. This could exacerbate the symptoms of injuries and illnesses, which in turn could make it harder to recover fully.

This is why staying fit is important to reduce the risk of succumbing to illness.
