Six Smart Moves To Survive The Holiday Season

Posted Dec 12 2010 8:39am

With the holiday's right around the corner, there's no question that you're likely growing a little excited about all the events and festivities to take place. But in that excitement, there may also be some anxiety brewing about whether or not you're actually going to be able to maintain any type of diet plan.

You've been working hard over the last few months and don't want to see all that hard work just go to waste. So what can you do to ensure that you maintain the path to success? How can you get through these holidays without having to set a New Year's Resolution to lose yet another 10 pounds?

Let's look at six smart moves that you can make this holiday season so that you come out with the same body that you went into it with.

Pre-Plan Around the Event

The very first thing that you should be doing as you move through the holiday is remembering to pre-plan around any event that you have on your schedule. For example, let's say you have a work Christmas party that evening and know that the chances are high you won't be eating entirely healthy foods.

What can you do to avoid weight gain?

You should begin by reducing back on the amount of carbs and fats you eat in the meals up to that event so that you can 'bank' those calories for later on. Since it does come down to the total number of calories that you've consumed versus the total number of calories taken in, if you can maintain a relatively appropriate calorie intake over the course of the day, you shouldn't gain weight because of it.

Just be sure that you don't skimp out on your protein intake however as that's the one nutrient that you absolutely must take in each and every day.

Stay 'Everyday' Active

Second, the next thing that you should be doing as you go about your holiday season is to look for 'everyday' ways to stay more active. Remember, you won't just burn calories while you're at the gym; you'll burn calories all throughout the day any time you're up and moving around.

If you know you're going to have to cut back on your gym workouts throughout the season, try and find alternate ways of being more active.

This will help to make up for any reduction in calorie burn experienced due to those missed workout sessions and help to prevent weight gain from taking place.

Bring Your Own Dishes

Third, when you are going to those holiday parties, offer to bring your own dish. Not only will the host likely appreciate this gesture but then you can be sure that there's at least one dish on the menu that you'll feel comfortable eating.

You can choose anything you want to prepare that uses healthy ingredients and will help take the edge off your hunger so you decrease the chances you turn to some of the other higher-calorie options available.

Watch Your Alcohol Intake

Also be sure to really monitor your alcohol intake over the season. If there's one place where many people really go wrong over the holidays, alcohol is it.

Those calories will really add up quickly and when you're consuming mixed beverages such as egg nog or cocktails, you're easily taking in over 300 calories per serving in many cases.

Save Treats For Special Foods

Now, if you've decided that you are going to give in and treat yourself, make sure you do it on a food that you can only get this time of the year. Another mistake that is often made is eating food that you can really get any time just because it's there.

Remember, you can only eat so many calories during the day without experiencing weight gain so really try and focus in on those calories that you only get once.

Focus On The Company, Not On The Food

Finally, try and make it a point this season to really focus in on the company that you're with rather than the food. Far too many of us get caught up in all the holiday goodies that are around us that soon it's all we're able to concentrate on.

This is a big problem because not only is this high food focus coupled with feelings of restriction going to make you obsess over each and every food plate you encounter, but it's also going to take away from the enjoyment of the season.

When you're less concerned with all the food that's available, you'll be much more able to resist temptation and in the process, you might not even find that you miss it.

So there you have six quick tips that you should put into action this holiday season. If you make use of these, you should have no problem enjoying yourself and maintaining the weight you desire.
