Secondhand smoke: Make that special New Year’s resolution

Posted Jan 10 2010 12:00am

The dangers of smoking are well-known.  Just think how many years “warning labels” have been on cigarette packs. The smoker is at greater risk of developing cancer and heart disease. But the secondhand fumes he or she exhales can cause harm to others.

The state of Wisconsin has an awareness campaign with a clever slogan: “Everybody Smokes When Anybody Smokes.” The Journal Times has a great article on secondhand smoke:

The article lists some helpful resources for those who want to quit the habit. According to The Journal Times, “Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in Wisconsin where more than 7,300 people die annually as a result of smoking.” The article also points out that “smoking significantly increases the risk of heart attacks,” and “secondhand smoke has proven to be just as harmful as smoking to children and families.” Some strong medicine to consider as you formulate your 2010 New Year’s resolutions. As always, share your resolutions by commenting on this blog or dropping me an e-mail at scottguythingblog@gmail.com.
