Sean’s Favourite Things of 2010

Posted Jan 03 2011 3:26pm

Happy New Year! I hope 2011 is off to a great start for you.

With another year under our belt and hopefully not a bigger belly hanging over it I thought I would share with you some of my favorite things from 2010 in fitness, food, lifestyle and health.

Basically things that help you be healthier and happier while you juggle the demands that life throws your way. Hopefully, you will take some of my favorite things of 2010 and apply them to your life to make 2011 your best year ever…

Oh and I planned to give you all a new 2012 Volkswagen Beatle but Oprah beat me to it with her favorite things, so better luck next year.

1. Tanka Bars- a great natural Native American snack bar made of naturally raised buffalo meat and dried cranberries. Surprisingly makes for a great combination and is way better than most beef jerky and also available in bites with a spicy pepper blend. Hard to find in stores but can be ordered online at www.tankabar.com

2. Lara Bars- Recently tried these healthy snack bars and love the simple natural ingredients, dates and peanuts. Easily found at most supermarkets or health food stores. www.larabar.com

3. Coconut Milk, Oil- If you want to fuel your body with HEALTHY saturated fat that your body will use as energy and not store for later use, boost your immune system, fight off viruses and bacteria and enjoy non dairy milk, coconut milk rocks and gives smoothies a nice creamy texture and of course a sweet hint of this fatty fruit.

Coconut oil is also a great natural source of fat that makes it great for cooking and frying. Use it in place of processed vegetables oils and margarine and both coconut milk and oil can be found in most supermarkets.

4. Almond Milk, Butter- Another great non dairy milk substitute is almond milk which is a low calorie alternative to dairy milk as long as you go with the unsweetened varieties.

Almond butter is my new favourite replacement for natural peanut butter as it has a higher nutrient value and tastes great in place of peanut butter, on oatmeal, shakes, celery and toast. A little pricer than natural peanut butter but easily found in your supermarket.

5. Remember The Milk app- No, you can’t drink this but it will help you remember to pick up some milk on the way home from work. Remember the Milk is a great “to-do” list task management application that can be used online and syncs to the iPhone app. I use this app everyday on my iPhone to remember my daily tasks and of course the milk. It’s free for the basic or upgrade to the pro version like I did for only $25 bucks a year. www.rememberthemilk.com

6. 1 Password app- Ever forget your online passwords? Sure you have. So here’s another one of my favourite apps for navigating all my frequently visited password protected websites from online banking to online shopping. This program securely stores all your favourite website login details so you don’t have to manually enter them every time you visit. It also has an online wallet feature that enters your credit card info for fast online purchases. Might be good or bad depending on your spending habits, but it’s double encrypted and secure and of course has it’s own iPhone app. Well worth the $39.95 price tag and comes with a free trial. www.1password.com

7. iPod Shuffle- To add to my Apple collection of iMac, Macbook Pro, and iPhone, (still holding out on the iPad) Santa brought me this little gem for Christmas. This mp3 player is not much bigger than your thumbnail and makes a great gym companion for some focused and intense workouts. It’s Apple’s least expensive player at around $50, clips to your waistband or shirt and gives you all the music motivation you need at the gym without looking like the Ultimate Warrior and strapping a bulky arm band around your guns. Available wherever electronics are sold or the obvious Apple.com

8. iGoogle- Google has taken over the world so it’s time it takes over your homepage on your computer as well. This customizable app for your browser’s homepage (the first page that loads up when you go online) allows you to add all your favourite gadgets for sports scores, news headlines, weather and apps like gmail, calendars, reminders and sticky notes. It’s your whole life on one webpage,( which sounds kind of sad), but at least keeps you organized and you will never EVER forget the milk with your remember the milk gadget for your iGoogle page. www.google.com

Stay tuned for Part II of Sean’s Favorite Things of 2010 coming in a couple days…
