Researchers in Scotland are looking for Scottish couples who would be willing to test a new male contraceptive injection. They are looking for 20 couples to be part of a one-year international trial involving 200 couples. The trial is being run by the World Health Organization (WHO).
For years, researchers have been trying to find a way to give men contraceptives so birth control would not always be a woman’s responsibility. Allowing men to be in charge of their procreation could solve a lot of problems and they could ensure that they would not get a woman pregnant. Unfortunately, previous attempts at a male birth control pill or a male birth control injection haven’t been too successful. The main reason the injections weren’t successful were likely because they needed to be given once a week.
The new injection, which is a combination of the hormones progesterone and testosterone, only needs to be given once every two months and researchers believe that this would be a more acceptable schedule for men.
So far, it seems that the injections are just as effective as the birth control pill is for women. After receiving an injection, a man’s sperm count drops to zero in most men, although some men may have up to one million per milliliter. Normal is 20 million sperm per milliliter.
Of course, such an injection would be similar to the pill in that it only prevents pregnancy and not the spread of sexually transmitted infections, such as gonorrhea or HIV.
Would you take such an injection?
