Real Men, Real TV ...

Real Men, Real TV

If there ever was a program on television that shows the complexity of men, Rescue Me is it. Now in its second season, this dark humored drama, follows the lives of a New York firefighter squad, post-9/11. (Tuesdays on FX. Check for local listings.)

Denis Leary (producer and co-creator) can leave his stand-up comedy behind as far as I'm concerned. His aggressive, in-your-face brand of humor didn't work for me, but it works beautifully in this compelling drama.

I watched the other night with my husband, who needed an update. When spoken out loud, my plotline summary sounded like your typical soap opera. But it's the intelligent, realistic and sympathetic characters (and the fine actors who portray them) who distinguish this show from so many others. It brings to mind NYPD Blue in its first and second seasons.

With lesser writing skills, Rescue Me could have devolved into one-dimensional stereotypes. It's obvious that the writer's respect the humanity behind the testosterone.

If you want to catch up, TelevisionWithoutPity provides a thumbnail sketch of each week's episode and follows with a lengthy synopsis. If the summary is too long, then go to the forums. I love the viewer commentary for saying out loud ('er, in print) what I'm thinking.
