Thomas Beatie, dubbed as the “pregnant man” who made headlines around the world after appearing in Oprah Winfrey’s show, has given birth to a baby girl Thursday (July 3).
Beatie, 34,who lives in Oregon, was born a woman but decided to become a man 10 years ago. He began taking testosterone treatments and had breast surgery to remove glands and flatten his chest. He got pregnant through artificial insemination. Beatie’s wife, Nancy Roberts, said she inseminated him with a syringe using sperm purchased from a bank.
A Filipino television network, ABS-CBN, reported that Beatie has Filipino ancestry – he has a Caucasian mother and a Filipino father. He was born as Tracy LaGondino and was a former Miss Hawaii Teen USA finalist.
Hisunusual situation first became publicafter he wrote an article entitled “Labor of Love” in March in “The Advocate”,theleading US gay magazine.
Nancy, to whom Beatie has been married for five years and who has two grown daughters by a previous marriage, said in Oprah’s show that the couple’s roles will not change once the baby is born. “He’s going to be the father and I’m going to be the mother,” she said.
Their marriage is legal and he is recognized under state law as a man.
