Movember is the month formerly known as November and it’s dedicated to men and men’s health.
We all know that research into various illnesses, including cancer, is very important. But, some people feel that a lot of emphasis is put on some types of illnesses to the detriment of others. Movember aims to change this.
So what exactly is Movember? According to the (U.S.) Movember website:
Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness for cancers that affect men.
At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. The Movember participants, known as Mo Bros, have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their Mo, raising money along the way for cancers that affect men – specifically prostate and testicular cancer.
The movement is international, so if you go to the Movember site home, you can click on your particular part of the world to see what is going on in your country.
Money raised goes to charities that support research into men’s diseases. According to the U.S. Movember site, this year’s charities are the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
How did this all start?
Movember is an Australian brainchild that began in 2003. Mos is Australian slang for mustaches. The guys thought that growing their Mos would be a great way to bring the mustache back into fashion and, at the same time, raise money and awareness for prostate cancer research.
The month starts with the Movember man clean shaven. He then begins growing his mustache (not a beard or goatee!) throughout the month. Then, at the end of Movember, several major cities around the world have parties called a Gala Partè to show off their mos. The best one gets crowned Man of Movember.
This whole event is not limited to men – but women participate by encouraging their men and by helping raise money. Between the start of the Movember movement and now, Movember has raised $45 million from all over the world.
Will you participate in Movember? Should we have a Movember gang right here?
