My boyfriend always wakes up with pain in the right side of his abdomen round to his back. What could this be?

He only seems to feel the pain if he has been lying down for long periods of time but he is getting quite concerned as it has been happening on and off for over a year now. He has no other symptoms. Any advice appreciated, thankyou.
