My partner has a hard lump under the skin on the right hand side of his lower back. He has just had a kidney infection which required hospitalisation. He has a pain at the site of the lump. Are the two connected?

It seems like it could be connected. Pain is a sign of infection and you should voice your concerns to his doctor.
