Hymen Hype

It's a lamp. What were you thinking, you dirty mind?!?

Hey, men… how much do you value a woman’s virginity? And what’s your proof of her virginity? A broken hymen?

I’d like to share with you this interesting note in a brochure on reproductive health produced by the Department of Health (Philippines).

“Many men still believe that the hymen is a tangible proof of virginity. It really doesn’t matter if hardly anyone knows anything about this piece of untouched tissue beyond its reputation for breaking during sexual intercourse. Society mores so ordain it, and popular lore is rife with stories about women who were beaten up or abandoned by their husbands on the wedding night because their hymen was no longer intact.

A double standard exists that allows men to be as debauched as they please before marriage. Supposedly, they have nothing to lose. But do women lose anything? What does the state of the hymen really say of them? What exactly is the hymen and why all this hype?

The vaginal opening may be partly covered with a thin piece of skin at the opening called the hymen. Other names for it are “cherry” and “maidenhead”. Biologists have long said that the hymen is different between one woman and the next. Some have a hymen that breaks easily, even without intercourse. Some women may continue to have sex with men without any injury to the hymen at all.

It seems irrational then to base a person’s virginity and her value as a person on this flimsy tissue. Virginity then, should be redefined to mean purity of purpose, commitment and sincerity, more than the physical aspects of a woman’s sexuality. A woman should be valued for what she is, what she makes of herself, and the degree to which she is able to contribute to the improvement of society.”

So, will you still look for a virgin or would just settle for “like a virgin”? Do you hear Madonna singing now? Hehehe.
