A good shave from a barbershop is a luxury every man should have at least once in his life, but it's not always convenient or financially feasible to have them regularly.
Fortunately, it is possible to get the perfect shave outside of the barbershop, even in your own bathroom.
If you want to give yourself a barbershop shave at home, you can make it happen. With the right tools and know-how, you can give yourself a shave that will make you feel like a million bucks. Here's how you can do it.
Invest in quality products. Get a good cartridge razor instead of a disposable. You will also want a shaving cream brush and shaving soap that can exfoliate and prep your skin. Many serious shavers use badger brushes, but boar-bristle brushes may be enough for you. Avoid synthetic brushes.
Plan a time to shave. By planning out a convenient time to do your barbershop shave, you can take your time and enjoy the experience. Usually, shaves are best after a hot shower or bath when your skin is warm. You can also use wet towels heated with warm water or the microwave. This will soak your beard and give you a few minutes of relaxation.
Get set up. Gather your hot towel, razor, shaving soap, brush, and aftershave. You'll also need to fill your sink or a bowl with hot water.
Lather up your beard. Use your brush and shaving soap to work up a thick lather and let it sit for a few minutes. Be careful to not let it dry, and add more if you need additional moisture later.
Shave with your hair growth. Pull your skin tight and shave with the growth of your hair to avoid irritation. Take your time. If you need a closer shave, go in the opposite direction of the growth for the second time around. Be sure to continually clean your razor as you shave, and re-lather when an area has been shaved.
Rinse with cold water. Once you have removed all of the growth you'd like, rinse your face with cold water. Keeping the temperature cold will close your pores and feel good. Finish things off with an aftershave or lotion.
Don't forget to clean up. To make sure you're ready for your next great shave, clean your equipment carefully and store it where it can stay dry. Applying mineral oil to your blade can extend its life.
Enjoy your shave!
