Man boobs, male breasts, or gynecomastia, sometimes even known as moobs, are basically the result of excessive chest-fat. Not only is this fat visible on our exterior but it is also a sign that more fat is residing deeper in the body.

So, the key here is to reduce body fat. It's not about building muscle. And you can do that through exercise and diet.

Physiological fact. The human body can't 'spot-lose' weight. In other words, you can't lose fat from one part of your body and not the rest of the body (short of surgery). Now this does not only go for man boobs-Gyneomastia-but also love handles, a fat belly, fat thighs or fat anything.

Too much heavy exercise in the chest area, such as heavy bench presses, can bulk up the muscles under the layer of fat to such a degree that your man boobs can seem even bigger!

If you are badly out of shape, then walking, swimming or light jogging are great activities to start with. If you really want an exercise routine that is completely flexible ie you can scale it up as your fitness develops, then get yourself a set of kettlebells (cast iron weight looking somewhat like a cannonball with a handle). Kettlebell training will not only burn the fat, it will also increase you strength … and drop those boobs to a cool set of well sculpted pecs.

Exercise alone in theory will get rid of man boobs, but you may have to do a lot of it, and regularly. By cleverly combining exercise with diet you will have a "deadly duo" working for you. A personal trainer can guide you for a exercise and diet regiment fit for you.

But since man boobs are a sign of internal fat, and since internal fat hampers the function of vital organs such as the heart and liver, those moobs should be taken as a health warning. It best to get checkup with your doctor or health care professional. You can ask your doctor if testosterone pills are good for you.

Good article, interesting about the bench presses. One of the causes of Gynecomastia is the imbalance of testosterone and estrogen, with too much estrogen in the body. That's where man boob pills come in. Check out  http://www.reducemanboobsnow.net/index.php/supplements/whats-so-special-about-man-boobs-pills for more info on it.

Sorry I'm 12 hours late to the party.  Both RxBlogger & Joe are spot on.  Man boobs, moobs, or gynecomastia is excess body fat, typically resulting from too much estrogen (E), which is a byproduct or metabolite of testosterone (T).  Of course, this is also a self-fulfilling prophecy as E then decreases T production.

DHEA is converted in 2 steps into T which is then aromatized into E.  DHEA can also be converted directly into E so if you're taking over-the-counter DHEA, be careful, as too much can be wasted.  Plus, you don't naturally have much control as to whether your body converts the DHEA into T or E.

Also, having too much T (presumably from external sources, eg shots, cream/gels or shots) can also increase E as a wasted byproduct.

Likewise, the other byproduct of T is dihydrotestosterone (DHT).  So if you take medicine, eg finasteride or dutasteride, to lower your DHT to keep your hair and/or shrink your prostate, you run the risk of increasing your E (think of T as the fulcrum of a seesaw w/DHT & E on opposite ends).  That's why the most common side effects of finasteride & dutasteride are gynecomastia and/or loss of sex drive, both resulting from an increase in E as DHT is decreased.  This is Joe's point.

I mention all this physiology b/c beside diet & exercise to reduce one's overall body fat (recall, as RxBlogger mentioned, that there is no way to spot reduce fat w/o surgically intervening), the other solution, especially if your E is too high, is to chemically/medically lower your E using an aromatase inhibitor.

These medicines are typically used by (female) breast cancer survivors who don't want any E in their body.  They are used off-label to reduce E in men and thus medically correct gynecomastia.  There are some neat studies that demonstrate that by lowering one's E, one can then increase T (think of the body as a giant thermostat always attempting to regain equilibrium).  But as I noted above, taking T can actually make things worse (read about testimony given by Barry Bonds former girlfriend describing loss of libido and hair loss, presumably b/c allegedly taking 'roids w/o supervision can do that to you).

One last point:  if you want/need to increase your T, don't take it in pill form (at least not if you live in the States) since the only oral T legally available here can increase your risk of liver damage.  Outside of the US, there is a safer oral form of T available but it has a very short-half life and must be taken several times a day.

I've written more about T, DHT & E on my blog.  Good luck!
