High Fructose Corn Syrup: Yet another tabloid controversy

Posted Apr 18 2011 8:08am

For a long time now, one of my favorite movie stars has been Christian Bale and for good reason too. Watch "The Machinist" if you are interested in knowing how the mind can subconsciously control your words and actions.

Well, that's not the only movie he's made but if you read up on some of his early movies, you'll find that American Psycho was one of those movies where he all but really gave an astounding performance.

Of course, and if you didn't know this already, Bret Easton Ellis was the author of the book that was made into a movie, and yet again, he has been in the news for all the wrong reasons this time with his infamous writeup about how people are missing the point if they think Charlie's story is one about his battle with drugs.

Whether you agree or not, from a writer's point of view, it's a fabulous piece of writing, and it's newsworthy too since Charlie Sheen has been in the news for sometime now for his continued controversial behavior.

Another topic of controversy this week has been the discussion surrounding the use of high fructose corn syrup , and while there's a lot that has been written about this subject in terms of the dangers and side effects that are involved since we consume it so much, it really impales Charlie's drug-problem which is really dubious to me, to say the least.

But let's rehash this topic once again… just for those who don't know!

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)

If it isn't obvious, this mixture of glucose and fructose has been obtained from the starch of corn (also called maize in the UK), and of course, with this mixture being used in several forms such as HFCS 55, 42 and 90 in soft drinks, processed foods and baked foods.

And this is where the controversy has erupted since most people say that this product is dangerous to use in almost every food or drink that you pick off the supermarket rack these days while others claim that it's all just hogwash.

So, what's the truth then? And so, let's find out…

Pros and Cons of using High Fructose Corn Syrup

Perhaps the root cause of all this controversy is due to the fact that a study conducted by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that eating foods that contain high fructose corn syrup results in obesity since it is twice as bad as sugar.

Yet another study conducted by Princeton also seconded the aforementioned study in concluding that not only are there high fructose corn syrup side effects but one of the primary effects is obesity as well.

And in this study, it was also understood that the way the subjects of the study (rats) metabolized both sugar and HFCS was very different despite the fact that the calorie amounts were the same.

The debate still rages on… and there are several articles over the internet that screams "bloody murder" but here is an article that I really liked…

In Closing

You can be sure that the recent blather of opinion and news that is related to Charlie Sheen is just very different in comparison to the hue and cry raised about high fructose corn syrup.
